About this Journey

This nine-day private journey links three defining chapters of China: Beijing’s imperial landmarks, Xi’an’s archaeological heritage, and Shanghai’s historic neighbourhoods and contemporary waterfront. High-speed rail and a domestic flight connect the cities, while the route leaves enough time to experience each place beyond a quick photo stop.

The journey is designed for travellers who want a clear first introduction to China, with private sightseeing, varied city walks, and a balance of celebrated landmarks and everyday urban life.

Panoramic view across the Forbidden City from Jingshan Park
The Great Wall winding through forested hills near Beijing

Begin in Beijing with the city’s ceremonial and imperial heart. Walk through Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City, look back across the palace roofs from Jingshan Park, and continue through the lakes and historic lanes around Beihai, Houhai, and Nanluoguxiang. A full day outside the centre brings you to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall before returning to the Temple of Heaven.

Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an
Xi’an City Wall and its historic fortifications
Bell and Drum Tower Square in central Xi’an

Continue by high-speed train to Xi’an, where the Terracotta Warriors reveal the scale of China’s first imperial dynasty. The route also explores the city’s living heritage: its fortified city wall, Bell and Drum Tower area, Muslim Quarter, Yongxingfang, and the evening atmosphere around Great Tang Everbright City.

Shanghai skyline beside the Huangpu River

Finish in Shanghai, moving between Yu Garden, the City God Temple area, Xintiandi, Wukang Road, Nanjing East Road, and the Bund. Cross the Huangpu by public ferry to see the historic waterfront from Pudong, then visit the Pudong Art Museum and walk along the riverside as the skyline begins to light up.

This is a fixed reference itinerary with a measured pace and a strong sense of place in each city. Your preferred start date and final arrangements are confirmed when you enquire.

Itinerary

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Beijing and Jingshan at sunset

Arrive at Beijing airport or railway station and continue by private transfer to your hotel in the city. After check-in, the remainder of the day is intentionally unhurried, giving you time to rest after the journey or take a first walk through the surrounding neighbourhood.

If your arrival time allows, visit Jingshan Park in the late afternoon. A short climb leads to the hilltop viewpoint directly north of the Forbidden City, where Beijing’s central axis, palace roofs, and modern skyline unfold in one broad panorama. Stay for the changing evening light before returning to your hotel.

Day 2: The Forbidden City, Beihai Park and Houhai hutongs

Begin at the Meridian Gate and follow the ceremonial route through the Forbidden City’s grand Outer Court. Walk through the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony, and Hall of Preserving Harmony while learning how imperial audiences, state ceremonies, and court protocol shaped life inside the palace. Continue into the Inner Court to see the Palace of Heavenly Purity and the more intimate residential side of the complex, then cross the Imperial Garden and leave through the northern Gate of Divine Prowess.

Pause for a palace-inspired lunch near the Forbidden City, then continue on foot to Beihai Park for a slower-paced afternoon beside the water. Explore Qionghua Island and the White Dagoba, then look closely at the Nine-Dragon Screen while following the park’s lakeside paths.

Later, continue into the Shichahai and Houhai area. Wander the narrow hutong lanes and observe courtyard homes, small workshops, and neighbourhood life between the lakes. Continue on foot past the lanes surrounding Prince Gong’s Mansion and Soong Ching-ling’s Former Residence. Finish beside Houhai, where the lakeside becomes lively after dark, and enjoy the evening at your own pace.

Day 3: Mutianyu Great Wall, Temple of Heaven and Nanluoguxiang

Leave central Beijing early for the drive to Mutianyu, approximately 1.5 hours under normal traffic conditions. Take the cable car up to the wall and spend time walking between stone watchtowers, stopping at open sections for views across forested ridges. The walking distance can be adjusted to your comfort level. Descend by cable car before returning to the city.

In the afternoon, explore the Temple of Heaven, where Ming and Qing emperors performed ceremonies connected with good harvests. Walk through the landscaped grounds to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, experience the unusual acoustics around the Echo Wall, and continue to the Circular Mound Altar to understand the symbolism built into the complex.

End your last Beijing evening around Nanluoguxiang. Historic hutong lanes now hold snack counters, small restaurants, independent shops, and cafés, making this an easy place to walk, sample Beijing flavours, and enjoy free time before returning to the hotel.

Day 4: Travel to Xi’an and explore the old-city centre

Leave Beijing and travel to Xi’an by high-speed train. On arrival, meet your private transfer and continue to a centrally located hotel. Take time to settle in before beginning a relaxed first exploration of the old-city centre.

Walk around Bell and Drum Tower Square as the monuments become illuminated, then continue toward the Muslim Quarter. The lanes here are known for busy food stalls, local pastries, noodles, grilled dishes, and small shops. This is free-exploration time, so you can browse and taste what interests you instead of following a fixed dining schedule.

Day 5: Terracotta Warriors and Huaqing Palace

Travel east of Xi’an to the Qin Shi Huang Imperial Tomb Museum. Explore the principal archaeological displays and see ranks of life-size warriors, horses, and chariots created for China’s first emperor. Learn how the figures differ in rank and expression, how the pits were discovered, and why excavation and conservation continue decades after the first finds.

After the museum visit, take part in a clay-warrior workshop. Shape a small figure by hand and keep the finished piece as a personal reminder of the day.

Continue to Huaqing Palace at the foot of Mount Li. Walk through landscaped courtyards and historic bathing-pool areas while hearing stories associated with the Tang court and the palace’s long imperial history. The quieter garden setting provides a contrast to the scale of the morning’s archaeological site before you return to Xi’an.

Day 6: Xi’an City Wall, local food culture and Tang-style nightscape

Start on Xi’an’s Ming-era city wall, one of the best places to understand the rectangular plan of the old capital. Walk along the ramparts, pausing at gates and watchtowers for views over both the historic centre and the modern city. Pause for a simple tea break near the wall and watch the daily rhythm of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Continue to Yongxingfang, where regional food stalls and cultural displays introduce flavours from across Shaanxi. Sample local specialities at your own pace and watch a shadow-puppetry presentation when scheduled.

In the afternoon, visit Xi’an Museum for a broader view of the city’s development and the dynasties that made it an imperial capital. Then continue toward Daci’en Temple and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area before nightfall. As the evening lights come on, walk through Great Tang Everbright City, a broad pedestrian district where illuminated architecture, public performances, and Tang-inspired displays create a lively finish to the day.

Day 7: Arrive in Shanghai, the Bund and Xintiandi

Fly from Xi’an to Shanghai and meet your private transfer at the airport. After hotel check-in and a short rest, begin on the west bank of the Huangpu River. Walk along the Bund after dark, looking across the water to the illuminated towers of Pudong, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, while the historic waterfront buildings form a contrasting backdrop behind you.

Continue along Nanjing East Road, Shanghai’s busiest pedestrian shopping street, then make your way to Xintiandi. Restored shikumen lanes sit beside contemporary architecture, boutiques, and restaurants, showing how the city adapts older neighbourhood forms to modern life. Enjoy dinner independently in Xintiandi before returning to the hotel.

Day 8: Shanghai’s history, gardens, French Concession and both riverbanks

Begin at the Shanghai History Museum, where reconstructed shopfronts, vintage transport, photographs, and everyday objects trace the city’s change from a river settlement into an international metropolis.

Continue to Yu Garden, moving through rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and narrow passages designed to reveal a different composition at every turn. Outside the garden, explore the City God Temple area, where Taoist traditions sit alongside a lively market district. Browse traditional crafts and see the stalls known for local snacks such as Nanxiang soup dumplings and pear-syrup sweets.

After lunch, move into the former French Concession for a walking exploration of Wukang Road and Anfu Road. Look for Art Deco and Neoclassical details, shaded villa streets, and former residences associated with figures from modern Chinese history. Small galleries, bookshops, and cafés make it easy to pause and experience the neighbourhood rather than simply drive through it.

Return to the Bund in daylight to examine the waterfront’s mixture of Classical, Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque, and other European-influenced façades. From the promenade, compare the historic west bank with the contemporary Pudong skyline opposite.

Board a public ferry across the Huangpu River and continue to the Pudong Art Museum. Exhibitions change through the year, so the visit focuses on the current programme and the museum’s riverside architecture. Finish with a walk along Binjiang Road, where the Bund can be seen from the eastern bank as boats move along the river and the city lights begin to appear.
