About this Journey

This five-day desert journey combines supported off-road travel with three trekking stages through the Badain Jaran's dunes and lake basins. Begin in Zhangye, cross into western Inner Mongolia, walk to Red Lake and Fairy Peak, visit the Badain Jaran Temple, and climb Bilutu Peak before returning to Zhangye. The route balances demanding sand walking with vehicle-supported transfers, desert scenery, and time among the region's remote lakes and sacred sites.

The five-day journey begins in Zhangye with a route briefing before crossing into the Badain Jaran Desert by road and off-road vehicle. Desert lakes, high dunes, changing light, and the first night among the sands establish the scale of the landscape.

Two substantial trekking days lead past Red Lake, Huduge Jilin, Zhalate, Fairy Peak, and the Badain Jaran Temple. The final morning climbs Bilutu Peak and follows a chain of desert lakes back toward Alxa Right Banner and Zhangye, with vehicle support used for the long desert transfers.

Dagtu Pink Lake

The progression from Red Lake to Fairy Peak, Badain Jaran Temple, and Bilutu Peak gives the trek a clear desert rhythm, alternating demanding dune walks with supported transfers and time beside remote lake basins.

Itinerary

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Zhangye and prepare for the desert

Arrive in Zhangye and transfer to the designated city hotel. In the afternoon, visit Huguo Temple for a first introduction to the region's Buddhist history, then return for time to organise personal equipment before the desert crossing.

The evening briefing covers sand-walking technique, navigation, hydration, sun protection, camp conditions, vehicle safety, and the route for the following days. Any provided activity equipment is checked before departure so missing or unsuitable items can be resolved in Zhangye.

Day 2: Alxa Right Banner, desert lakes and Junji Gede

Drive from Zhangye to Alxa Right Banner and change to off-road vehicles after lunch. The desert sector normally uses three guests per vehicle for comfort and safety as the route crosses steep dunes toward Dashazao Lake and Celegeri.

Continue deeper into the Badain Jaran to Junji Gede, also known as Two-coloured Lake. Walk on the surrounding dunes, try sandboarding on a suitable slope, and remain for sunset as the lake and sand change colour in the evening light.

Day 3: Trek from Junji Gede to Red Lake

Begin the first full trekking stage after breakfast, following the marked line through high dunes for approximately fifteen kilometres. Walk at a steady pace, stay with the guided group, and use the support vehicles for water, safety, and logistics while learning how to read wind patterns and dune ridges.

Pause for a packed lunch before continuing to Dagtu Red Lake, whose mineral-rich water can shift from pale pink to deeper red according to season and light. After time beside the lake, continue to the day's finishing point and watch the desert sky after sunset.

Day 4: Fairy Peak and Badain Jaran Temple

Set out across the dunes for an approximately eighteen-kilometre trekking stage, passing Huduge Jilin and Zhalate before climbing Fairy Peak. The crest opens views over Miaohaizi Lake and the surrounding dune field, providing the main high viewpoint of the walking route.

After a rest on the ridge, continue through the Su Min Jilin area toward Badain Jaran Temple. Explore the lakeside setting and learn how the remote monastery has served local Mongolian communities and desert travellers before finishing the day in the temple area.

Day 5: Bilutu Peak, desert lakes and return to Zhangye

Travel by off-road vehicle to the base of Bilutu Peak and climb the world's highest stationary sand dune in the cooler morning air. From the crest, look across the Badain Jaran's repeating ridges and lake basins before descending carefully to the vehicles.

Drive out of the desert via Barun Yikeri Twin Lakes, Desert Tianchi, and Badan Lake, then change to the road vehicle at Alxa Right Banner. Continue to Zhangye for the railway station or airport, with onward services booked after the advised evening arrival window.
