Changbai Mountain Autumn Trek (Level 2/5)

Arrive in Changchun and transfer to the designated city hotel. After check-in, take a short orientation walk through the central district, stretching your legs after the journey and becoming familiar with the streets around the hotel before the mountain departure.

In the evening, attend the route briefing and review the weather outlook, trekking distances, clothing, water shoes, and luggage plan for Changbai Mountain. The meeting keeps the next morning's long road departure organised and allows time to resolve equipment questions.

Drive from Changchun toward Changbai Mountain and enter the volcanic canyon in the afternoon. Put on the provided water shoes and follow the shallow stream and wooden walkway through dark volcanic sediment, stopping at the First Spring of Changbai Mountain to taste the clear mineral water.

Continue to Erdaobaihe after the walk and take time to relax in the local hot-spring area. The day combines a long approach drive with a moderate four-kilometre canyon route, allowing the group to settle into the mountain environment before the main scenic-area visit.

Enter the North Scenic Area and use the park transport to the Heaven Lake summit route. Continue to Changbai Waterfall, Green Deep Pool, Small Heaven Lake, and the Underground Forest, following the volcanic water system from the crater rim into the forested lower slope.

Later, meet an experienced local ginseng forager and walk into the forest to learn the rituals, plant knowledge, and careful digging methods associated with traditional fangshan. Return to Erdaobaihe after the hands-on demonstration.

Drive to the primeval forest and begin the five-kilometre Red Stone Peak trek through autumn maple and mixed woodland. The trail climbs gradually through changing forest zones, with stops to identify volcanic terrain and the seasonal colours of the Changbai range.

After the hike, take a calm rafting route along a forest stream known locally as the First Drift of Changbai Mountain. Continue by road to Baishan after changing into dry clothing, completing a day of roughly four to five hours of walking and water activity.

Enter the South Slope scenic area and travel toward the Heaven Lake viewpoint at Guanming Peak. The route continues to Yuehua Twin Waterfalls and the high volcanic landscape near the China-North Korea border, where the crater rim appears from a broader angle than on the North Slope.

After leaving the mountain, drive to Changbai County and walk beside the Yalu River. The riverfront path looks across toward North Korea and introduces the border geography before the short transfer to the evening stopping point.

Drive to the trailhead and climb a steep mountain path toward the highland meadow. As the route gains height, the Yalu River and the mountains across the border open below, while autumn grasses and forest create broad views along the ridge.

Complete the five-kilometre trek and continue by road along the river toward Linjiang or Baishan. Stops focus on borderland scenery and the changing maple forest before arrival in the late afternoon.

Begin the final five-kilometre valley hike through maple forest and alpine meadow. The trail climbs to viewpoints over connected peaks of the Changbai range, then descends through dense woodland for a final close look at the autumn landscape.

After lunch near the trailhead, drive approximately four hours back to Changchun. The route finishes at Longjia Airport and then Changchun Railway Station, with onward tickets arranged after the advised evening arrival times.
