About this Journey

Level 2/5 – For most travelers in good health.

Exploring the wild Great Wall in northern Shanxi is a journey through rugged history and vast frontier landscapes. Centred on Youyu and Datong, the route connects Ming Great Wall ruins, ancient passes, and autumn scenery that reflect the desolate beauty of border culture. Highlights include Guangwu Great Wall, renowned for its jagged walls and iconic “Moon Gate”; Shahukou Pass, once the gateway of westward trade and ethnic exchange. Along the way, you can see rammed earth platforms, ruins and church remains (such as the “Dadanba” in Baitaizi Village), forming a unique landscape of the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. Autumn is the finest season, when golden poplars, pine forests, and rolling meadows create scenes like an oil painting. The trek is moderate in intensity, averaging 10–20 km daily, and suits travellers with good fitness and hiking experience.

Two full trekking days on unrestored ramparts are framed by Yanmen Pass and Guangwu at the beginning, then Motianling and the Buddhist cave art of Yungang at the end.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Taiyuan: Taiyuan

Arrive in Taiyuan and transfer privately to the hotel. After check-in, keep the first day light while preparing for the overland journey and two full trekking days on unrestored Great Wall sections.

Day 2: Ancient Pass & Wild Great Walls: Yanmen Pass – Guangwu Great Wall – Youyu

After breakfast, head to Yanmen Pass, known as the “First Pass of China.” After the visit, you will cross Yanmen Pass and arrive at the Guangwu Wild Great Wall outside the pass.

This was an important defence stronghold before Yanmen Pass, with ancient and desolate forts and the winding Wild Great Wall. Having gone through wars and the erosion of time, most parts are now left in ruins.

After the visit, you will drive to Youyu and check into a hotel.

Day 3: Full-Day Wild Great Wall Trek

After breakfast, you head to the Great Wall fortress. Upon arrival, you begin the first day of your Wild Great Wall trekking journey.

Entering the northern Shanxi region, the scattered ancient fortress ruins immediately evoke a sense of magnificence, desolation, solemnity, and decay.

It feels as though you have travelled through time: the yellow fortresses and rammed-earth sections of the Great Wall, weathered by centuries of wind and rain, appear mottled and broken, yet still retain their imposing presence and spirit.

Walking along the border wall, you gaze at the watchtowers, one after another, stretching far into the distance. The winding wall comes into view, as if silently telling stories of a distant past, bearing witness to both tragic history and present reality.

By evening, the trek concludes and you return to the hotel for check-in.

Driving Distance & Duration: 70 km, 1.5 hours

Day 4: Wild Great Wall, Shahukou Pass & Youwei Ancient City

After breakfast, you set off for the trailhead to begin the second day of your Wild Great Wall Trek.

The journey unfolds across a vast landscape where low skies press down upon broken ramparts, and weathered farmers tend their fields or herd sheep along the way. The scene feels at once desolate and full of quiet vitality.

Walking along the crest of the Wall, you balance on paths barely a metre wide, with steep cliffs and deep ravines dropping away on either side. The western wind howls in your ears, and it is here, high above the earth, that one truly senses how small an individual is compared with the Great Wall itself, and how fleeting you are in the endless sweep of history.

After leaving the wall, continue through Shahukou Pass, once an important gateway for westward trade, and Youwei Ancient City before returning to the hotel.

Return to the hotel in the evening for a celebratory dinner. A completion medal marks the end of the route's two dedicated Wild Great Wall trekking days.

Day 5: The Great Wall Meets Buddhist Art & Departure: Motianling Great Wall – Yungang Grottoes – Datong

Travel to the Motianling Great Wall, known locally as the Little Badaling and set among overlapping remains from different historical periods. The earthen ramparts and nearby church architecture create an unusual frontier landscape before the route continues toward Datong.

Visit Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose cave temples preserve major works of fifth- and sixth-century Buddhist sculpture. Walk through the principal caves with time to study the carved figures, painted surfaces, and architectural details.

After the visit, transfer to Datong South Railway Station at approximately 3:00 p.m. or Datong Airport at approximately 3:30 p.m. The onward train or flight should be scheduled after the confirmed transfer window.
