Private day trip
About this Journey
Shanghai’s food culture is best understood at street level, moving between neighbourhood kitchens, small restaurants, and the lanes where local dishes developed.

The walk begins near Huangpi South Road and continues through Xintiandi and the Former French Concession, with tastings of soup dumplings, scallion-oil noodles, red-braised dishes, and seasonal snacks.

Between tastings, the route explains how migration, commerce, and neighbourhood life shaped Shanghainese cooking. The walk concludes near People’s Square after tea and the final food stop.

The itinerary is a fixed central-Shanghai food walk. Specific dishes can change with restaurant opening hours and ingredient availability while preserving the planned number and style of tastings.

Day 1: A Full-Day Taste of Central Shanghai
Meet near Huangpi South Road Station and begin in Xintiandi with Shanghai soup dumplings, focusing on the thin wrapper, savoury filling, and hot broth that define the dish. Continue through the surrounding lanes as the route introduces the relationship between neighbourhood life and the city’s food culture.
Walk into the Former French Concession for further tastings, including scallion-oil noodles, red-braised dishes, seasonal vegetables, and traditional snacks selected from the confirmed restaurants. Green tea is served between stops while the route explains how Shanghai cooking absorbed influences from nearby regions.
Continue toward People’s Square for the final food stop and a concluding tea. The day is paced as a complete central-Shanghai walk, with restaurant substitutions limited to opening hours and ingredient availability while retaining the planned style and number of tastings.
