Private active journey
About this Journey
Western Hunan’s karst country offers a five-day route through stone paths, river valleys, caves, gorges, and minority villages between Changsha and Zhangjiajie.

The journey enters Jiemuxi on foot, follows Chenjiaxi toward the Youshui River, and reaches Furong Town by boat after a day of forest and waterside travel.

Zuolong Gorge and a guided cave experience add the most technical terrain before the final hike through Binglang Valley and its narrow karst passages.

The fixed route ends at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. Heavy rain or access restrictions can require a safety-led change, which is confirmed before the affected day.
Itinerary
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Changsha
Arrive in Changsha and transfer to the confirmed hotel. After check-in, settle in and prepare the clothing and personal items needed for the active journey into western Hunan.
The remainder of the day is reserved for rest and preparation. The active route begins the following morning with the long road journey toward Jiemuxi and the first short hike into the mountains.
Day 2: Hiking Jiemuxi’s Stone Paths
Leave Changsha after breakfast for the long drive into western Hunan. Continue by scenic shuttle from the Jiemuxi visitor centre to the trailhead, then follow a stone-paved path through forest and small stream crossings.
The first hike covers approximately five kilometres over two to three hours, with short uphill sections and wooden-plank crossings. Arrive at remote Jiemuxi Village by evening and settle into simple farmhouse lodging.
There is no mobile signal in the village, and vehicle access does not extend to the overnight stop. Carry toiletries, warm layers, and the personal items needed until the luggage is reunited with the route the following day.

Day 3: Chenjiaxi Valley, Youshui River & Furong Town
Continue west through Jiemuxi Valley along the Chenjiaxi section, following bluestone paths beside clear streams and forest. The ten-kilometre walk takes approximately three to four hours before reaching the road transfer.
Travel by minibus to Fengtan Pier and board the boat for a three-hour journey along the Youshui River. Mountains, villages, and quiet stretches of water lead toward Furong Town.
Arrive near Furong Town in the evening and walk through the historic streets, waterfalls, and riverside setting before checking in for the night.

Day 4: Zuolong Gorge & Karst Cave Exploration
Enter Zuolong Gorge after breakfast and follow the protected chain pathways along the canyon walls. Waterfalls, narrow rock passages, and steep steps create a more technical walking day than the earlier village trails.
After lunch, continue into a nearby karst cave with helmets and headlamps. Sinkholes, natural bridges, and mineral formations reveal the underground structure of the western Hunan landscape.
Leave the cave in the afternoon and transfer to Yongshun for the final overnight stay. Rest and prepare for the long hike through Binglang Valley on the following morning.

Day 5: Binglang Valley & Zhangjiajie Departure
Travel to Binglang Valley and begin the final seven-kilometre hike through caves, natural bridges, sinkholes, mountain streams, and narrow canyon passages. Some sections require the use of hands, ropes, and safety equipment under professional supervision.
Allow approximately six hours for the complete route, including the tight canyon crevice and the more technical transitions between rock levels. Finish the walk and return to the roadhead in the afternoon.
Transfer to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, where the five-day journey ends. Onward transport should be booked only after the estimated arrival time has been confirmed for the final itinerary.
